Power, Action and Maintenance Skills

POWER, ACTION AND MAINTENANCE SKILLS

Power Skills (Level 1):

Each Enneagram Type has an inherent set of “Power Skills” that come naturally to them. Initial changes in your life are easiest to make when using these skills.

Action Skills (Level 2):

You have started to master your “Power Skills” and now you are branching out by developing other, less frequently used, aspects of your personality. Action Skills are used when you are deliberately trying to change.  These skills, however, are not a far stretch for your imagination. You used Action Skills in that past when you have become stressed or forced to rely on them. These Level 2 skills are mentored by the Enneagram Type that is connected to your Type in the Lines of Disintegration (Stress).

Maintenance Skills (Level 3):

Maintenance Skills are when you are beyond simply starting to change. Now you are maintaining your progress. At Level 3 you have moved beyond your normal “mechanistic” or “natural” behaviors and are truly growing. True transformation is uncomfortable and takes effort in order to reshape your automatic thinking patterns. Maintenance Skills tend to be hard for you without shifting your point of view, letting go of old ways or breaking through a sticking point you had in the past. You are becoming more self-aware and learning to use the tools necessary for life-long health. These Level 3 skills are mentored by the Enneagram Type that is connected to your Type in the Lines of Integration (Growth).

These theories have been adapted and developed after reading Mary Bast and Clarence Thompson’s “Out of the Box, Coaching with the Enneagram” and relating them to the Stages of Change (Transtheoretical Model) by James O. Prochaska.
